The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes feasting, family, and fun. And the pressure to find that perfect gift. Here at Bizgenics Foundation, we want to make it easy and give you more reason to celebrate and less reason to stress. That’s why we’re making our Meyer lemon trees available to you at our Honolulu office in Kaimuki for a suggested donation of at least $20 per tree. (More citrus varieties are coming soon!) You can get one for everyone on your list and support our 3Ps: People, Planet, and Philanthropies!

We think lemon trees are great for just about anyone. Don’t believe us? Here are three reasons why lemon trees make the perfect gift:

Lemon trees empower people to learn.

Lemon tree planting provides an enriching experience for people of all ages and abilities. It even creates opportunities to learn about soil science, agricultural practices, design and construction, culinary arts, innovation and entrepreneurship, and more. No matter where your interests lie, you’ll find it easy to engage in a new project.

In fact, the learning potential is so great that we’ve created an entire Project Lemon Tree Curriculum that empowers students to create their own outdoor classrooms. Students in grades K-5 and 6-12 explore the topics above and get a hands-on learning experience. And teachers can even customize the 16 activities in the Curriculum to best suit their needs.

So whether you’re shopping for a student, a teacher, or just a lifelong learner, you’ll find that lemon trees have something for everyone.

Lemon trees are good for the planet.

Did you know that, of all cultivated plants, lemon trees are among the most efficient at removing CO2 from the atmosphere? That means they play an important role in reducing climate change and giving us fresh air to breathe. They also reduce soil erosion and don’t require much water. What great reasons to grow them here in Hawaiʻi!

Lemons have plenty of other uses too. You can add them to water or cook with them for a burst of flavor and a vitamin C boost. Plus, their citrusy smell, high acidity, and oil-containing peels make them great for fragrance and cleaning products. Instead of relying on harsh chemicals and expensive products, why not incorporate more lemons into your life?

With all those advantages, It’s a wonder that only 2.5% of the lemons we consume in Hawaiʻi are grown here. Just think of the impact you could have by gifting your friends and family with a lemon tree this holiday season!

Lemon trees promote philanthropy.

Is there anything better than giving a gift that’s pleasant, useful, and impactful? We can’t think of much! By buying a tree (or several!) from us, you’re supporting Bizgenics Foundation’s youth programs like Lemonade Alley and Project Lemon Tree that bring the community together and actively engage students in learning. You’re also contributing to our orchard programs and to the work we’re doing to support urban reforestation by providing trees to residential planters.

Lemon trees really are the gift that keeps on giving, and that’s something you can feel good about. Learn more about the work you’re making possible when you buy a lemon tree for a loved one.

Come get your lemon trees today!

We have plenty of Meyer lemon trees available for a suggested donation of at least $20 per tree. Each tree stands at approximately 18″ tall, comes in a 4″ sleeve, and includes planting tips and care instructions. Trees can be planted in the ground or in pots. When planted in the ground, mature trees can grow to 20′ in diameter, but you can prune them to any size. They can also bear between three and 400 fruit per year. That’s a lot of lemons!

You can find other tips on the Project Lemon Tree website, including topics like pruning and pest identification and control.

If you’re eager for more, we have additional citrus varieties coming soon, including Lisbon lemon, Tahitian lime, tangelo, and yuzu. Stay tuned!

So what are you waiting for? Contact Steve, our Chief Lemon Head, at (808) 220-6449 or steve@bizgenics.org to reserve your trees. They can be picked up at our Bizgenics Office in Kaimuki, at 1012 18th Avenue. This might just be the best gift you give all year!
