The longest Project Lemon Tree pergola is in construction starting with a new 150 foot long walkway, thanks to generous donations by the Elks Club and the Mason’s Union. The Elks Club, lead by Gloria Yao and Uli Cutter, have been working with Principal Dan Larkin and Vice-Principal Debrah Heyler to create this epic piece. The Mason’s Union have donated time as a public service project to form, pour and stamp-finish the new walkway.
32 Citrus Tree Pergola
For our part, PLT is supplying 32 citrus trees of varying types including Meyer Lemon, Lisbon Lemon, Eureka Pink Lemon, Eureka Lemon, Yuzu, Kumquat, Tahitian Lime, Key Lime, Kaffir Lime and more as well as continued use of the Project Lemon Tree curriculum. The curriculum includes soil science, planting techniques, pergola design and construction, irrigation, companion gardens and more.
Companion Gardens
Raised planting beds are also envisioned for companion gardens including Culinary Herbs, Bee Friendly and compatible Indigenous Plants. The goal is a composition of beauty, outdoor classroom learning environments and a shaded and clean walkway from school buildings to the playground. There has also been some talk about growing lilikoi on the adjacent fence line as lilikoi is highly compatible with citrus trees.
